Budapest Facial Cosmetic Surgery

Facial surgery (face lifting) is mostly performed to reach a younger look, by eliminating the changes related to aging; in some cases it aims at the adjustment of unattractive unique features of the face or the correction of unilateral facial paralysis. Instead of obtaining smooth facial skin, our goal is to get a natural, young-looking appearance, preserving and emphasizing the character of the patient's face.

Aging causes our facial skin to sag and lose its youthful tone. Wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes ('crow's feet') develop, horizontal lines on the forehead and vertical lines between the eyebrows become more expressed. Sagging of the skin makes nasolabial folds (the lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth) as well as wrinkles of the neck deeper. Jowls may also emerge. Lips thin, the tip of the nose seems to be longer and wrinkles around the mouth may also appear. The Aging process is accelerated by prolonged exposure to sun (also artificial sunlight i.e. solarium), smoking, stresses of daily life and certain illnesses. General preoperative examination is preceded by two or three medical consultations. After a thorough evaluation of the patient's face, its characteristic features, condition of its mime muscles and skin type, the plastic surgeon gives detailed information about the expectable results of the planned surgery.

The surgery is generally carried out under local anaesthesia combined with intravenous sedation. Scars are well hidden: incision begins above the hairline at the temples, extends in a natural line in front of the ears, and continues behind the ear lobe to the lower scalp. After the removal of excess skin, midface and neck skin is pulled back in conjunction with tightening of the underlying muscle and membrane by the help of stitches.

During the postoperative period strenuous activities, carbonated or alcoholic drinks, spicy foods and smoking must be avoided. Swelling and smaller bruising of the face are experienced in every case and generally continue for no more than a week or two. Severe complications are rare but poor healing of the skin or nerve damage may occur. More severe complications mentioned in the literature include infection at the incision line, nerve damage, and formation of blood clots (thrombosis).

Today, visible signs of ageing - even though they are combined by excellent mental skills - may reduce one's competitiveness when "fighting for" getting or keeping a job or a certain social position. This fact may explain the increasing number of rejuvenating facial cosmetic surgeries that can be safely performed by a well-trained and experienced surgeon with good aesthetic results.
